By: Tammy Foster.., Posted on: 2007-09-01

With today's ever expanding waist lines, the obesity epidemic is growing at an alarmingly rapid pace. The ever modern western world seems to have one of the biggest problems.

With a body mass index, BMI, of 30 or higher, you will win the medical label of obesity. The body mass index scale is a basic measurement of your height in proportion to your weight. It gives a benchmark of how much fat is stored in your body. Guess it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the higher the number then the more fat you have and the higher risk you have for obesity related health conditions.

The condition of obesity simply means there is just way too much fat! Wow! That is s fairly simply concept to grasp. Keep it up, the obesity problem is going to become an obesity epidemic.

Obesity is so clearly related to many of today's health concerns. One well known one is the damage to the joints resulting from the long term strain on the joints from the excess weight. This can lead to chronic pain and arthritis.

As the weight goes up and the body struggles to accommodate the extra pounds, people will generally become less and less active only contributing to the weight gain cycle.

Beyond the everyday strain that it put on the joints by being obese, the lack of activity, the general poor eating habits will also cause strain to the heart and the blood vessels resulting in high blood pressure, a higher risk of stroke, and other circulatory health issues. Obesity can also lead to sleep apnea which is the temporary stopping of breathing during sleep.

When you have crossed the line and have actually ventured into the land of obesity, it is very hard to actually lose the weight and get back into shape. In fact, there is not one single thing that is easy about the whole process. By the time that most of you reach obesity level, not only will you be battling the devil of fat you will also be battling the demons of the lack of self confidence and self esteem. Yes, you can win the fight against obesity, but it takes a lifestyle change and a long term approach. The latest diet fad is not going to win the race here.

Talking with your physician is the best place to start if you are obese. Be honest and then suck it up and agree to stick to the plan to diet and exercise as laid out by your physician. You are going to have to work at it to reclaim your health. So step up to the plate and just do it!

Being so fat that you have now waddled into the pool of obesity is a time bomb waiting to happen. Your health simply will not hold up under all the stress and strain of that much extra weight. You have to work closely with your doctor so that you are back in control of your body. You can win the battle of obesity, you just have to decide deep in your soul that it is a battle that you really truly want to win.
